Aleksandar MitrovicMagpies are determined to avoid relegation this season and the club officials have approved additional investments in the winter transfer market.

Newcastle United have had a busy summer, having brought in a couple of new players to boost their squad and increase their chances of the top half finish.

However, things haven’t turned out the way manager Steve McClaren and club’s owner Mike Ashley had hoped for as Newcastle United are currently sitting in 18th place and are poised for a stiff relegation struggle. Magpies currently stand at 2.5 (6/4) with William Hill to be relegated to the Championship at the end of the season.

Newcastle United have already bought Aleksandar Mitrovic and Chancel Mbemba from Anderlecht for €18 million and 12 million respectively, Florian Thauvin from Marseille for €17 million and Georginio Wijnaldum from PSV for €20 million.

In addition, McClaren’s side has been revamped by the January signings of Jonjo Shelvey from Swansea for €16 million and Henri Saivet from Bordeaux for an addition €6 million, taking the total tally to €89 million spent on new players this season.

However, with the team entering the new year 2016 in serious danger of being relegated from the Premier League, Mike Ashley does not want to miss out on the next season hefty television deal so he has sanctioned additional transfer activities in order to keep his team up.

New players have been largely disappointing and McClaren is thought to be ready to shuffle his deck for the upcoming fixtures.

Magpies are travelling to Watford in the next Premier League round and Aleksandar Mitrovic will get perhaps the last chance to shine and convince his manager of his quality.

Still, Daily Mail has exclusively found out that Newcastle United are planning a move for the unsettled West Brom striker Saido Berahino who would come to increase competition for a place upfront in a deal that could be worth up to €24 million.

The same source also revealed that Magpies are interested in bringing in the out-of-favour Tottenham player Andros Townsend for the reported fee of €12 million.

What this means is that Newcastle United would go on to become the third biggest spenders in England’s top tier as the next two deals would take the tally to €125 million.

Will big spending increase Newcastle’s chances of staying up?
