Ki SwanseaSwansea manager Gary Monk has lifted the lid on why star midfielder Ki Sung-Yueng has undergone a knee surgery before the season ended.

The Korean midfielder has enjoyed his best ever campaign since arriving to England, bagging 8 goals in 33 Premier League outings this term, earning a new four-year deal in the process.

But, having struggled through a knee problem ever since returning from a loan spell at Sunderland, Ki has now undergone a surgery to repair the problem ahead of the new season.

“All players carry niggles and you have to decide whether you can manage it or it needs to be dealt with immediately,” Monk said.

“Ki has been fantastic and you want someone who has done that well to be part of it to the end of the season, but you do not want to take any risks.

“He came back from Sunderland on loan last summer with a sore knee and we were advised he could have the operation then but he had the World Cup coming up.

“Understandably, he did not want to miss that so he went, and since then his knee has been fine.

“But it had flared up a bit in recent weeks. We have had to manage it and give him a rest but he has still contributed really well.”

Swansea ended their European hopes with a home loss to Manchester City, but they are priced at 3.50 (5/2) to defeat Crystal Palace on the final day of the season.
