Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur Preview

Manchester City will be aiming to secure a fourth consecutive League Cup as they take on Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola’s men have won each of the last three editions of the competition and will understandably be favourites once again this time out having not lost a tie in the competition since a 1-0 defeat to Manchester United way back in October 2016. Having overcome Bournemouth, Burnley, Arsenal and Manchester United on route to the final this time around, they can be backed at a price of 1/4 with William Hill to lift the trophy this time around.

Meanwhile, Spurs’ appearance is somewhat uncharted territory having not won a trophy since 2008. They have enjoyed a relatively trouble-free run to the final though having defeated Chelsea, Stoke City and Brentford, whilst their first match in the competition against Leyton Orient was cancelled due to a number of positive COVID-19 tests from the League Two outfit. As it stands, Ryan Mason’s men are huge underdogs at odds of 16/5.

Whilst there could be goals between the two sides at Wembley, with a 0-0 not being produced since a 2010 meeting, it is somewhat unlikely that both teams will find the back of the net considering the recent history. In six out of the last eight matches between Manchester City and Spurs, the victors have won to nil. That could certainly be a clever bet for Sunday afternoon’s game. Pep Guardiola’s men can be backed at a price of 6/4 with Betfair to do that this time around. Meanwhile, Tottenham are somewhat less likely at 10/1.

One aspect that both sides will no doubt need if they want to lift the trophy at Wembley is goals. Tottenham’s task in which to get those has taken a huge blow with Harry Kane’s injury. The England captain sustained the problem in the recent 2-2 draw against Everton with his fitness up for debate. In his absence, Heung-Min Son is the most likely to net first for Spurs according to the bookies at a price of 13/2 with Betfred. In other fitness news, full-backs Matt Doherty and Ben Davies are thought to be doubts ahead of the match.

Manchester City also have their injury doubts in attacking positions. Sergio Aguero has been in and out of the Manchester City side with persistent issues but is still amongst the favourites to net the opening goal at Wembley. The Argentine sits at a price of 3/1. Meanwhile, Kevin de Bruyne will also be subjected to a late fitness test after returning to training.
