Manchester City did well to win the first trophy of the season by beating Chelsea in the Community Shield match, proving that they are now the team to beat in England’s top flight.

In spite of the lack of high-profile signings, with Jack Rodwell the only new arrival, the Citizens are being tipped to defend the Premier League title, and Paddy Power has them at 5/4 to beat their rivals to the trophy for the second successive season.

With Carlos Tevez back to his best and David Silva, Mario Balotelli, Samir Nasri and Yaya Toure all hungry for more success, it is no wonder bettors all over the world are backing City for another very successful season.

The Etihad outfit are also 2/5 with William Hill to finish higher than Chelsea in the Premiership this season, whereas they are no less than 100/1 to win the quadruple of major trophies (Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and Capital One Cup).

“City were favourites for the Community Shield and they duly delivered and at the same time, sent out a warning to their rivals that they are the team to beat,” said Hill’s spokesman Joe Crilly.

“They are our favourites to win the League as well and our punters certainly seem to agree with us with most of the pre-season money on City to do the business.”
