Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva will be joining Inter Milan in the January transfer window, The Guardian can reveal.

Having been deemed surplus to requirements at Anfield, the Brazilian will be allowed to leave the Reds this winter and it is no clear he will be moving to Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

Inter Milan plan to sign Lucas on loan until the end of the season and thus compensate for the expected departure of Felipe Melo.

The Nerazzurri are also looking at Lassana Diarra and John Obi Mikel, but the Brazilian is more likely to join the club this winter.

The 29-year-old has spent last nine and a half years at Anfield and the time has finally come for him to leave the Reds for greener pastures.

Lucas made a total of eight Premier League appearances this term, deputising at centre-back in some games, but the goal he scored back in May 2009 remains his only Premier League goal to date.
