Monday evening’s Premier League action comes from Anfield where top four chasing Liverpool face a Newcastle United side who look set for another mid-table finish.

The Reds bounced back from two straight defeats with victory over Blackburn Rovers in their FA Cup quarter-final replay on Wednesday evening, and they will need to carry that winning mentality into the league if they are to have any hope of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

Manchester City’s defeat to fierce rivals Manchester United means that the gap between the champions in fourth and Brendan Rodgers’ side in sixth remains at seven points.

Jordan Ibe is available after missing the last six weeks and Emre Can returns from a ban but Steven Gerrard and Martin Skrtel are still suspended, and Adam Lallana and Mario Balotelli are both doubtful with illness and injury respectively while Mamadou Sakho has a hamstring problem.

Daniel Sturridge is favourite to open the scoring at 5.5 (9/2) with Ladbrokes, ahead of Raheem Sterling who is a 6.25 (21/4) shot with Stan James.

The home win is priced at 1.4 (2/5) with a number of bookmakers, with the visitors as highly priced as the 10.0 (9/1) on offer from Bet Victor. The draw can be backed at 5.25 (17/4) with Bet 365.

John Carver’s side have won just two from twelve in the league and go into this game on the back of four straight defeats but sit nine points clear of the bottom three with the joint best goal difference of all the teams in the bottom eight.

Daryl Janmat should be fit enough to feature despite having a calf problem, though Siem De Jong and Roland Aarons will both sit the game out despite returning to training after their respective lay-offs.

Ayoze Perez is 15.0 (14/1) to get the first goal of the game with Paddy Power, with Emmanuel Riviere a 17.0 (16/1) chance with the same firm.

In all of the meetings between these two sides since the inception of the Premier League, there has been one hundred and thirty goals, so you may be tempted to back there being four or more scored this time around at 2.9 (19/10) with Betfair.
