Gareth Bale injuryTottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas has said in no uncertain terms that he does not expect Gareth Bale to be in contention for the opening game of the season.

Spurs kick off the new Premiership campaign away to Crystal Palace and they are 1.83 (5/6) with William Hill to enjoy a winning start.

However, one player that will not be on the pitch next Sunday is wantaway winger Gareth Bale, regardless whether his proposed move to Real Madrid goes through.

Gareth is training on his own so there is a possibility that he makes a recovery,” Villas-Boas told reporters.

“The only thing I can tell you is that the player is under medical department treatment on this pain in the foot that has been disturbing him.

“He is far, far off in terms of fitness regarding what the others have done because he has stopped for three weeks, since the last time he played for Tottenham, so I wouldn’t expect (him to play against Palace).”

Spurs will have few more important players missing the opening game, with Michael Dawson and Jan Vertonghen still on the sidelines.
