Birmingham have assembled a list of six candidates to replace Alex McLeish, with the Brum chiefs looking to appoint a new boss as quickly as possible.

Alex McLeish has angered the club officials by deciding to leave the club after he has already agreed to bring three new players this summer and the Blues are now looking for the new boss.

Birmingham are now preparing for what will be a very strange season, seeing that they have just been relegated to the Championship, but are set to take part in Europa League qualifying stages.

Birmingham acting chairman Peter Pannu has revealed that there are at least six candidates for the coaching job at St Andrew’s.

“I am discussing the situation with Carson Yeung and we hope to install the new man as soon as possible. There are at least six (candidates) on the radar.”

Former Newcastle boss Chris Hughton is the odds on favourite for the post and is priced at 3.00 (2/1) with William Hill, whereas Gianfranco Zola and Billy Davies are also in the mix.

The former Chelsea star has been without a job since leaving West Ham and he is now 7.00 (6/1) to be elected the new Birmingham coach.

Billy Davies, on the other hand, has recently left Nottingham Forest after failing to lead the Forests to the Premiership and he is also held in high regard by the Birmingham chiefs. Davies is 4.50 (7/2) to win the race.
