Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero has been ruled out of the 2018 World Cup through injury, the Argentine FA has revealed.
The 31-year-old was expected to be the Argentina number one goalkeeper in Russia after playing every single minute of the qualifying campaign, but it was simply not to be.
Argentina Football Association moved to announce that Romero would have a surgery on his knee, causing him to miss the showpiece tournament.
Tigres shot-stopper Nahuel Guzman was called into the squad as a replacement for the Manchester United goalkeeper.
Sergio Romero has starred for Argentina despite making mere 7 Premier League appearances in three years at Old Trafford, and he performed admirably on the road to the 2014 World Cup final.
The experienced footballer also played at the 2015 and 2016 Copa America tournaments, but is now set to miss the 2018 World Cup.
