Andy CarrollWest Ham striker Andy Carroll will take no part in club’s tour of New Zealand after suffering an ankle injury.

The England international picked up the problem in training and in turn missed the friendly defeat to Wellington Phoenix.

It has now been revealed that he will not be in contention for Saturday’s game against Sydney FC, although he should have been recovered by the time the Premier League season starts.

“After assessment by the Club’s medical experts, it was decided to let the England international rest for both remaining games and receive intensive treatment to ensure he is fit for the start of the season,” a statement on club’s official website read.

The good news is that the new injury is not related to the heel problem that saw Carroll miss a big chunk of the previous league campaign.

West Ham have managed to recruit some high-quality players this summer, with Mauro Zarate, Cheikhou Kouyate, Aaron Cresswell, Diego Poyet and Enner Valencia all signing deals at Boleyn Ground.

As a result, the Hammers should be able to challenge for a top half finish and they are 3.50 (5/2) to end the campaign in top 10.
