Everton caretaker manager David Unsworth is hoping he would be given an opportunity to land a permanent job at Everton following the sacking of Ronald Koeman.

Dutch manager was sacked on Monday following a dismal start to the season with Everton. The Sunday’s 5-2 drubbing at the hands of Arsenal at home was the final straw as Everton remain locked in the relegation battle with just eight points from nine games.

Despite spending somewhere in the region of £150 million on new players this summer, Ronald Koeman failed to meet the high expectations at the club and was given the marching orders following a meeting with Everton chairman Bill Kenwright and chief executive Robert Elstone.

Former Everton defender David Unsworth stepped up from being Under-23s boss and has been promoted as caretaker manager alongside his assistant John Ebbrell.

Unsworth will overlook the team in their Wednesday Carabao Cup tie at Chelsea for which the Toffees are backed at 7.50 (13/2) betting odds to surprise out-of-form Premier League champions.

Unsworth and Ebbrel are expected to take charge of the upcoming Premier League match away to Leicester City on Sunday, whereas the former Everton defender is desperate for a chance to land a permanent gig at his dream club.

“It’s a great opportunity. I am keen. I’d love this job. I’ll give it everything I’ve got. Who wouldn’t want this job? It is a wonderful football club with amazing fans and it is a top job for any manager, myself included. I want to manage. I think the time has come to say that and I make no secret of it at all.”, said Unsworth who returns to the caretaker role after Roberto Martinez’s sacking 18 months ago.

Unsworth is likely to receive a four-match backing up until the November international break and is a favourite at 4.00 (3/1) price to land the permanent role, but is not exactly expected to be given an opportunity to lead the team on permanent basis.

Among the potential candidates to succeed Ronald Koeman are Burnley boss Sean Dyche, David Moyes, former Borussia Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel, legendary Carl oAncelotti and surprisingly Phil Neville.
