Barcelona midfielder Arturo Vidal has sustained an injury on international duty with Chile.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the former Bayern Munich man had to leave training with his national side and will not be risked in their friendly clash with Japan on Friday.

It is also believed that he may not be recovered in time for the country’s second fixture of the current international break with South Korea and could return to Spain for treatment with his club.

Vidal, 29, only signed for the Catalan giants in the summer for a reported £27m deal from Bayern Munich. He was meant to be a replacement for the departing Andres Iniesta who left his boyhood club for Japan. However, he is yet to make his first start for the reigning La Liga champions having made three appearances from the bench in league play. Instead, Luis Enrique has preferred a midfield trio of Sergio Busquets, Philippe Coutinho and Ivan Rakitic.

Vidal has previously struggled with knee injuries in Germany having suffered a serious problem three years ago that resurfaced at the end of last season, resulting in the midfielder missing the final seven fixtures of the Bundesliga campaign.

Meanwhile, Vidal’s nation Chile are at 23/20 with bookies with William Hill to beat Japan in their friendly on Friday morning.
