The 33-year-old French defender Jeremy Matthieu will leave La Liga giants Barcelona during the summer transfer window.

It’s more than a transfer speculation but rather an all but confirmed piece of news as Matthieu was officially given permission to train with Portugal heavyweights Sporting CP ahead of a prospective move to the Portuguese club.

Matthieu will train with Sporting CP during the holiday offseason after which the two clubs and the Frenchman will make an official decision on the player’s future.

The French defender still has a year running in his contract with Barcelona, but the Catalan club are prepared to let Matthieu leave on a free transfer as he is deemed surplus to the requirements at Camp Nou.

Jeremy Matthiey joined Barcelona from Valencia in 2014 for a €20 million transfer fee and has made 91 appearances for the Catalan club. Ernesto Valverde is looking to rebuild the squad for next season and is not counting on the veteran centre-back who struggled with injuries during the closing stages of the last term.

Barcelona new manager is given a difficult task of lifting the Catalan side up after a disappointing season which left Barcelona with only Copa del Rey title in their hands. The Catalans finished second to Real Madrid in the La Liga race, whereas they disappointed in the Champions League as well.

Valverde’s charges are given 2.00 (1/1) betting odds to become the Spanish champions in the 2017/18 season.

The Catalans return to training on 12 July by which time they expect to have reached an agreement for Jeremy Matthieu’s move to Sporting CP.
